A dull coat in dogs is most often a fatty acid or skin barrier issue, not a grooming problem. The coat is a downstream signal of skin health, and skin health depends on omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid balance, protein quality, and micronutrient adequacy. Persistent dullness, brittleness, or excessive shedding typically reflects a diet that under-delivers on one or more of these inputs. Improvements take time. The hair shaft visible today was produced by skin nutrition delivered weeks ago, which is why coat changes from a formulation shift usually appear over four to eight weeks rather than immediately.
What a dull coat actually looks like
Dullness is not a single observation. It tends to show up as a cluster of small, related signs that owners notice during grooming or in changing light.

Loss of gloss: The coat picks up less light than it used to, even immediately after a bath.

Reduced softness: The hair feels coarser between the fingers, particularly along the back and flanks.

Brittleness: Hair breaks at length rather than shedding cleanly from the root.

Increased shedding: More visible hair on furniture, in the brush, or in seasonal coat blow-outs that take longer to resolve.

Visible flake or scale: Small white flakes near the skin, separate from environmental dander.
Veterinary dermatology assessments score these dimensions individually (alopecia, glossiness, softness, scaliness, and overall condition) because a coat can degrade in one dimension while staying intact in others. The pattern matters more than any single observation.
Why coat quality reflects what's in the bowl
Hair is metabolically expensive tissue. A dog's coat consumes a meaningful share of daily protein and fatty acid intake, which is why nutrition shows up there earlier than it shows up in most other places. Three formulation factors carry most of the load.
Fatty acid balance
Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are the structural lipids of the skin barrier. Long-chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) contribute to membrane fluidity, sebum quality, and inflammatory regulation in the skin. Diets that under-deliver on these fatty acids, or that skew the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio too far in one direction, often produce dull, brittle coats over time.
Protein quality and digestibility
Hair is roughly ninety-five percent protein. Diets with low protein digestibility deliver fewer usable amino acids to the hair follicle, which produces thinner, weaker hair shafts. Protein quantity matters less than protein quality — a moderate amount of highly digestible protein outperforms a larger amount of poorly digestible protein.
Micronutrient adequacy
Zinc, copper, biotin, and vitamin E all participate in coat and skin maintenance. Deficiencies are uncommon in well-formulated diets but show up reliably in coat quality when they occur. The relevant question is not whether a diet contains these nutrients, but whether they are present in bioavailable forms and at levels appropriate for adult maintenance.
Small dogs also have higher energy and nutrient requirements per kilogram of body weight than large dogs, driven by a higher metabolic rate and greater relative surface area. Every bite has to carry more, which is why nutrient density — including the protein and fatty acids the coat depends on — matters more in a small-breed diet, not less.
How formulation supports coat quality
Formulations should address coat quality through fatty acid calibration and protein selection rather than through additive supplementation. The goal is delivering the inputs the skin needs in the forms the body uses best.
Calibrated omega-3 fish oil
Purified fish oil provides long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) in measured amounts, supporting fatty acid balance and skin barrier integrity. Excess fish oil oxidizes during storage and can disrupt vitamin E status, which is why oxidative stability is monitored alongside fatty acid content.
ALA from flaxseed and chia
Plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid contribute to fiber diversity and fatty acid balance. ALA is not a substitute for EPA and DHA, but it adds compositional breadth and contributes to the overall omega-3 footprint of the formulation.
Highly digestible protein selection
Turkey, lamb, cod, and egg are selected for digestibility and amino acid profile. Egg in particular contributes biotin and sulfur-containing amino acids (cysteine, methionine) that support keratin synthesis, which is the structural protein of hair.
Vitamin E for oxidative stability
Mixed tocopherols are included for oxidative stability of the formulation itself and to support fatty acid handling at the tissue level. Vitamin E protects polyunsaturated fatty acids from oxidative damage in the skin and coat, which is why fish oil and vitamin E are typically formulated together.

How we monitor coat quality
PGF conducted an eight-week preclinical feeding evaluation at Cornell University to assess palatability, digestive tolerance, and general health markers in adult dogs. Skin and coat condition was a structured endpoint.

When to involve your veterinarian
Nutrition supports coat quality. It does not replace medical care.
Contact your veterinarian for hair loss in defined patterns (rather than diffuse thinning), visible skin lesions, repeated ear or skin infections, intense itching, weight changes, lethargy, or excessive thirst alongside coat changes. Sudden coat deterioration over days or weeks, rather than a gradual decline, also warrants evaluation. A formulation conversation belongs after underlying conditions have been ruled out.
